Important rules and tips for driving in Crete - know before you go
Driving in Crete follows Greek road law. Roads range from modern motorways along the north coast to narrow winding mountain routes in the interior. Here are the key traffic rules to know before you drive:
Paid parking zones are common in Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania city centres, typically costing €0.50-€1.20 per hour. Underground and surface car parks in major towns charge approximately €5-€10 per day. Free parking is widely available in most beach resorts and villages.
Crete has a good network of petrol stations along main roads and in towns, including BP, Shell, EKO and Avin. Unleaded 95 costs approximately €1.80-€2.00/L, diesel around €1.70-€1.90/L. Note that petrol stations in remote mountain areas can be rare - fill up before heading off the main roads.
The main north-coast motorway (BOAK) connecting Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania has toll booths at several points. Tolls range from €0.90 to €2.20 per section. Payment is accepted in cash or by card at the toll booths. Most rental cars do not include a prepaid toll card.
